Dame Mary Perkins DBE FBOA
Dame Mary Perkins DBE FBOA together with her husband Douglas founded Specsavers Optical Group in Guernsey in1984. They had previously grown a successful chain of 23 optical practices in the South West of Wales before selling up and moving to the island in 1980. Specsavers is now the largest privately owned optical group in the world and third largest retail optical company globally. Mary was awarded a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 2007 for services to business and to charity and in the same year voted the Most Outstanding Business Woman at the UK National Business Awards.
Mary was also awarded the Supreme Achievement Award by the optical industry in 2003 and awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Cardiff University in 2005. She received the Rotary International Community and Vocational Service Award in 2005 and the Spirit of Everywoman Award in 2006. Mary also serves on the board of many local institutions and voluntary organisations, is Court Assistant of The Livery of Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, a Freeman of the City of London and an Ambassador for Vision Aid Overseas, Sightsavers and Actionaid. She is also Patron of Kidscape and of EveryWoman.
